Cord Jefferson’s mother, Susan Haas, who was white, encountered many hardships and injustices in her life.

Despite facing neglect and rejection from her family, she responded with empathy and compassion.

Her marriage to a controlling husband ended in divorce, resulting in more rejection from her family.

Later, she fell in love with a black man, Cord’s father, Wilson C. “Jeff” Jefferson Jr., which led to her father disowning her.

She supported racial integration in her sorority during college and later became a teacher at a mostly black school.

Despite societal discrimination and personal losses, she stayed strong and dedicated to love and understanding.

To add to her challenges, she was diagnosed with aggressive triple-negative breast cancer, which lacks common receptors for treatment.

Yet, she tackled this challenge with a mix of stability and humor, seeing the irony in how her diagnosis differed with her diverse social circles and lifestyle.

On the other hand, Cord struggled with powerlessness and frustration, realizing the inability to change the situation.

Memories of his mother’s strength and kindness amid tough times motivate him to confront his own feelings of ineffectiveness.

Likewise, Cord has learned to embrace the challenge of being compassionate and decent in a world of cruelty and indifference.
