Jamal Mashburn’s Son Continuing His Basketball Legacy

In March 2024, Jamal Mashburn launched the “Box Out Colon Cancer” campaign in association with Exact Sciences and The Blue Hat Foundation.

During an interview with KRLD’s John Liddle, the former basketball player discussed Colorectal Cancer.

The NBA great, who himself suffered from colon cancer and lost his mother to the same, urged people to screen for colon cancer.

He also challenged college basketball coaches to get their screening ahead of March Madness.

Talking about college basketball, he mentioned his son Jamal Jr., who surpassed his career scoring in college.

“I’m really happy for him, to be a part of his journey, to really watch it, provide advice, and also to just be present as well and to try to see it through his eyes,” Mashburn said.

Key Takeaways

  • Jamal helped his team clinch the Mountain West Tournament championship.
  • He also played at the University of Minnesota.
  • During his high school, he played for two institutions.

Jamal Mashburn Jr. Plays For The Lobos

Jamal Mashburn Jr., the son of Jamal Sr. and Michelle, is an American collegiate basketball player.

He plays for the New Mexico Lobos of the Mountain West Conference as a point/shooting guard.

Currently a senior, he is one of the key players for the Lobos and has repeatedly shown his worth.

One of the games where Jamal sealed the win for UNM was in a February game against the Nevada Wolf Pack.

Mashburn handed his team a win with two late three-pointers. He scored 17 points, 6 of which came in the final two minutes, in their 83-82 win against the Wolf Pack.

Similarly, Jamal Jr. showed impressive performance in the Mountain West Tournament championship game against San Diego State.

His 21 points against San Diego State was the team’s second-highest score, only behind Jaelen House (28).

Jaelen and Jamal’s scores, along with JT’s 13, Nelly’s 5, and a single-pointer from Mustapha, helped them seal the game 68-61, claiming the title.

Prior to the University of New Mexico, he played for the Minnesota Golden Gophers.

He Played One Season At Minnesota

The collegiate athlete grew up playing baseball and lacrosse and only started playing basketball at 10.

Jamal Jr. shared his high school days at two different institutions, Gulliver Prep and Brewster Academy.

In his two seasons at Gulliver Prep, he averaged 25.7 points per game and earned an honorable mention of first-team all-state.

Later, he transferred to Brewster Academy and led his team to the National Prep Showcase championship game.

Following his stellar high school career, he committed to playing college basketball under head coach Richard Pitino at Minnesota as a four-star prospect.

However, Pitino was fired by the athletic director, Mark Coyle, after a poor season.

After just one season at Minnesota, Jamal transferred to UNM, following his coach, Pitino.

Will Jamal Jr. Be Playing In The NBA, Continuing The Legacy Of His Father?

While Jamal Mashburn made it to the NBA as a fourth-round pick, his son will likely miss the chance, at least in the 2024 draft.

ESPN released a list of the Top 50 college prospects for the 2024 draft on March 20, 2024, but no players from UNM were included.

Similarly, in 2023, an NBA Mock Draft was released by nbamockdraftdatabse.com, which included 223 players.

However, this list snubbed the Lobos’ guard. An article by Bleacher Report highlighted his 6’2 stature as a substantial liability on defense.

In contrast, Nevada Sportsnet released the top NBA draft prospect from the Mountain West Conference with Jamal Mashburn Jr. on the list.

This year’s draft is scheduled from June 26, 2024, to Thursday, June 27, 2024, and until then, we will have to wait to see if any team will pick Jamal.
